Underground, Cuba

Words

I still have like 50 or 60 words to go... here's a handful.

harrow: a cultivator that pulverizes or smooths the soil

dung-creel: A large wicker back basket used for carrying dung

approbation: official approval

quiescent: not active or activated; marked by a state of tranquil repose; being quiet

cottar: A cottager, sometimes with a smallholding. He was obliged to labor on the lord's land either free or for a fixed sum.

villein: term used in the feudal era to denote a peasant (tenant farmer) who was legally tied to the land he worked on. An alternative term is serf (from Latin servus = "slave"). A villein could not leave the land without the landowner's consent.

metayer: The Metayage system (Fr. métayage) is the cultivation of land for a proprietor by one who receives a proportion of the produce, as a kind of sharecropping. (Presumably a "metayer" is someone who does this.)

assiduity: great and constant diligence and attention

traduce: malign a person or entity by making malicious and false or defamatory statements

profligacy: careless wastefulness; shameless and immoral behaviour

Continent of New Holland: former name of Australia
