Even More Vocabulary!

These are all taken from Richard Dawkins' "God Delusion":

1. Bower: a place enclosed by overhanging boughs of trees or by vines on a trellis.

2. Ommatidium: any of the numerous small cone-shaped eyes that make up the compound eyes of some arthropods.

3. Minatory: baleful; threatening or foreshadowing evil or tragic developments.

4. Redound: to have a good or bad effect or result, as to the advantage or disadvantage of a person or thing.

5. Carnassial: one of the teeth used by a carnivore for shearing flesh, being the last upper premolar and the first lower molar.

6. Ratel: nocturnal badger-like carnivore of wooded regions of Africa and southern Asia.

7. Propitiate: make peace with.

8. Abrogate: annul by an authoritative act; to abolish by the authority of the maker or his successor; to repeal.

9. Timbrel: small hand drum similar to a tambourine; formerly carried by itinerant jugglers.

10. Bewail: complain; scream; deplore; regret strongly.

11. Truculent: cruel or savage; deadly or destructive; defiant or uncompromising.

12. Scrump: to steal fruit, especially apples, from a garden or orchard.

13. Peroration: concluding section of a discourse, either written or verbal, in which the orator or writer sums up and commends his topic to his audience; to speak or declaim at great length, especially in a pompous or grandiloquent manner; to harangue.
